Knee Pain and Barefoot Style Shoes
After a visit to Smart Body physical therapy today, I had an eye opening consultation. For the past 2 years I’ve been intrigued by all the barefoot shoes and at the same time have had knee pain. You’d think I’d put two and two together, but not when all these studies are coming out that barefoot is better, etc etc, why would I? Having had 2 ACL surgeries, I’m surely more prone to knee pain, but it was clear to my PT that the Nike Frees, Vibram Five Fingers and thin flip flops were causing my knee issues. After our consultation I visited a local New Balance store and purchased some arch support insoles and will report back in two weeks with my progress. I’m also going to take photos of my feet and see if there’s a noticeable difference.
If you’re watching this video and you suffer from ankle and knee pain, you might want to consider visiting a PT, a New Balance store or trying a pair of insoles. Barefoot running and barefoot style shoes might work for people carrying less weight around, but from what I’m told some people just aren’t meant to go barefoot, not matter what you weigh. I’m also going to stop running outside and get exercise by biking and other means.
I’m not a physician, nor do I pretend to be one. Take my advice with caution and I highly recommend seeking a professional.
